History

Come, Enjoy, and Stay Awhile!

Leesburg was originally called Hamptonville; it was named for Joseph Hampton and the Henslee family respectively. The post office was established as Hamptonville in 1836 and then changed to Leesburg in 1839. Weiss Lake Dam was constructed on the Coosa River in the late 1950s forming the 30,200 acre Weiss Lake that stretches across Cherokee County, Alabama, and into Floyd County, Georgia. Leesburg has the motto, “Come, Enjoy, and Stay Awhile”. After seeing all that the quaint town has to offer, it is an easy choice. Industries like KTH, Parkdale, and Prince Minerals have found a home here in Leesburg. All of them combined account for over 880 jobs that impact the community. Leesburg provides both public and private access to Weiss Lake. One important access is Leesburg Landing. Through dedication and vision, the town has taken a small local park and created a modern facility that is now home to numerous fishing tournaments throughout the season.
